ABYSS Double Bass Quartet and Ny Musikk Komponistgruppe (NMK) have invited seven composers to create new works for double bass quartet, focusing on the instrument’s unique sonic, physical, and performative possibilities. The ensemble—Håkon Thelin, Inga Margrete Aas, Nikolai Matthews, and John Andrew Wilhite—works across contemporary, improvised, and experimental practices, and has premiered works by Martin Rane Bauck, Håkon Thelin, and Idin Samimi Mofakham.

The project encourages holistic approaches to composition, engaging with tuning systems, resonance, overtones, acoustic exploration, and potential visual or spatial components.

The new works will be developed and presented in March 2027, with further details to be announced.
